Secret Shopper Scam

Consumers are warned of a secret shopper scam that involves fake ads for employment as a secret shopper, investigative or mystery shopper. The secret shopper scam could people being told that they could earn money by buying items at various stores or dining at different restaurants and the company will then send an employment packet. This packet may include training assignment, business evaluation forms and a cashier’s check that could range from $2,000 to $4,000. The task would be to cash the check, pose as a customer and wire the money. The scam is that the check is fake and the person who wires the money becomes liable.

In this case, it is vital to determine what is real or what a scam is. When applying for a mystery shopper job, you should be wary of companies that put ads on radio or the classified ads of newspapers or via unsolicited email. Keep in mind that legitimate shopper companies do not advertise this way. You should also be cautious of a charge fee for applying. Never pay any fee to obtain job information or apply for the job.

Remember that you are responsible for the fake check deposited even if it is a cashier’s check. The moment the check bounces, the bank will deduct from the consumer’s account the amount credited with the fake check and this often comes with additional charges.
