In general, it is considered uncouth to blow off steam at the office. That is why in today’s workplace, anger is masked by hostile glances, sarcasm and even veiled threats. So, what do you do to handle angry employees?
Do not correct minor details since this could only escalate the anger. Moreover, telling others that they will not get what they want since it are against policy is even bad. Keep in mind that people do not respect policies that prevent them from having what they want. When an employee is angry, the most common reaction would be to tell him or her to calm down, which is unwise. Furthermore, telling a person who is upset that his or her problem is trivial compared to yours will only make matters worse.
You should show concern if you are not in danger of the anger. Let the person know that you are willing to help and listen. Allow him or her to vent frustration and don’t interrupt. Resolve the problem as soon as you get the facts. Clarify any misunderstanding and resolve the issue jointly. When faced with hostility, do not patronize or become angry yourself. Instead, look for your mutual purpose, concern and listen actively. Get to the facts and solve them together.
